When the designers of Paris were still dictating skirt
length and sleeve shapes on a seasonal basis, Esprit
threw away the rulebook. Founded in San Francisco in
1968 by Doug and Susie Tomkins, the company
created a uniquely casual style for a carefree yet selfassured
generation, who cared about one another and
the environment.
In 1979, John Casado designed
the famous stenciled Esprit logo with
its triple-bar E, and the journey to
global brand recognition began. In
1981 the company began tapping the
important wholesale market in Asia and
two years later opened its first flagship
store in Hong Kong. In 1988, Esprit
International was created to manage
and develop the trademark and brand
of Esprit worldwide.
